User's guide for ATLAS users at CCIN2P3

This page is meant to describe the usage of computing resources at CCIN2P3 and concentrate on the specificities of using CCIN2P3. For general introduction to Atlas computing and software, see the

New user at CCIN2P3

Please have a look at the CCIN2P3 User's guide that include in particular information on how to request an account and how to connect.

Default shell login scripts are provided which sources the ATLAS login scripts, please do comment or remove these lines.

AFS areas

The various type of AFS disks (HOME, GROUP and THRONG) differ by their use and by their management. Please read http://cc.in2p3.fr/docenligne/236 SORRY BROKEN LINK TO BE REPLACED for more information, and : To obtain some space on GROUP and THRONG areas please contact the czar. There is no equivalent in size to the AFS work areas at CERN, large (shared) disk space is under SPS.

NFS areas (SPS)

Semi-permanent files can be stored on the semi-permanent storage (SPS) disks located in /sps/atlas/u/username (where u is the first letter of the username). There is no backup of this area. Data and files stored in there can be removed in case of problems with disk space. Files can be (tar'ed and) copied to HPSS as a backup but this is not automatic.

Statistics of usage are available here.

An automatic cleaning procedure is done on /sps/ zone when it is full at 95%:

  • files are removed until the occupancy decreases to 80%
  • eldest files used are removed
  • if all files have been used in the last three months, the automatic procedure is not done and an email is send to user support Atlas which will contact persons individually.

Using Atlas software and data

Setup Atlas software

Since CCIN2P3 uses CVMFS to access Atlas releases, grid and analysis software, after an initial setup:

export ATLAS_LOCAL_ROOT_BASE=/cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch/repo/ATLASLocalRootBase
source $ATLAS_LOCAL_ROOT_BASE/user/atlasLocalSetup.sh

for which one can define an alias as

alias als='export ATLAS_LOCAL_ROOT_BASE=/cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch/repo/ATLASLocalRootBase; source $ATLAS_LOCAL_ROOT_BASE/user/atlasLocalSetup.sh'

one can setup Atlas releases or other software in the same way as CERN, e.g. lsetup root, asetup xxxx

Accessing the CERN svn repository

Add to your ~/.ssh/config something like

Host svn.cern.ch
   GSSAPIAuthentication yes
   GSSAPIDelegateCredentials yes
   Protocol 2
   ForwardX11 no

Each time you want to access the svn repository you need a CERN kerberos ticket: kinit your-cern-account@CERN.CH (Please note the capital letter CERN.CH).

Data access

The datasets can be explored via the AMI browser or DQ2. One can find out which datasets are copied to CCIN2P3 and how to access it interactively here

A simple introduction to analysis frameworks, batch and grid analysis is available here.
